"CHP Officer Earl Scott, 36, was gunned down about 4:40 a.m. along northbound Highway 99 near Hammett Road in Salida.
...
Neighbors said since Scott was not married and did not have children, he volunteered to work the overnight shift so a fellow officer could have more time with his family."
Next time you want to bitch and moan about those awful childfree or childless people and their selfishness, think about the times those awful, selfish people did your work - either because they volunteered, or because they got stuck doing your job because you had to tend to your kids - and have some gratitude.
Your children are important to you. I understand that. There's an entire world that keeps on turning while you are parenting, and all too often it falls to those without children to keep that world turning. In this case, it cost a man his life.

This is the first I've heard of this case, and I'm not familiar with the Salida area. So I don't know how much publicity Officer Scott's death has gotten so far. But I betcha that if a cop with CHEEELLLDRUNNNNN had been gunned down, it'd have gotten MUCH more publicity, with lots of "tear-jerking" coverage.
Great blog! I just posted about not having kids, and how now that I'm in my 30s, certain people--older women with children especially--seem to think I'm jealous of people with kids and full of regrets. Ha!
Parents can be some of the most self-righteous, ungrateful human beings to walk the planet. There is very little recognition for those who do so much for them and their children and get nothing in return.
Just this afternoon, I was at Kohl's department store shopping for a gift for my little niece. Because I don't have any of my own, I was having trouble with the sizes. A woman was nearby with her little girl, so I asked her about it. The assumption immediately was that I, too, had children of my own. Throughout the course of what was a very pleasant conversation, it eventually came out that I am childfree. I got The Look, The Sniff, The "Oh, I See," and The Quick Walk Away.
My blog is devoted to many things, and one of the top topics is being childfree and living the childfree lifestyle in a breeder's society. Come on over to the Barbeque and check us out. There is one rant in particular, "Helpful Hint for an Australian Bint," of which I am particularly proud.
Nothing wrong with offing a thug with a badge. If you don't pay your taxes to support gov't schools and programs for the children, that cop would have gladly come for you with gun drawn, to put you in a cage and kill you if you resist.

Okay, now that's just fucking asinine on so many levels.
One, if you don't pay your taxes, the IRS comes after you. AFAIK, that involves communication by mail, then meetings in an office. Fines often happen, and sometimes you get some prison time, but really, all the government wants is your money. Paying to incarcerate a person removes money from the system -- precisely what they are NOT trying to do. And incarcerating people alien to the criminal culture introduces those people to that culture. This is not good unless you think the government is *trying* to create an exploitable population, but that's another argument for elsewhere.
Second, there is nothing to suggest this cop was doing anything other than taking up the slack for a child-burdened peer. Someone always has to do it, and it sure won't be other parents... they're all too busy slacking off themselves.
To attack a good man protecting and serving with no evidence is absolutely despicable.
