Childfreedom in the news

Thanks to the new Blogger features, I have a whizzy sidebar titled "Childfreedom in the news." Click one of the keywords in that section to see abstracts from news articles containing that keyword. Some of the keywords and results are on the outer fringes of "childfree," but may still be of interest.

Baby bins

I don't know why it surprised me to read that a Japanese hospital is considering setting up a drop-off hatch for unwanted babies. Put the baby in a hatch, and down it slides to an incubator with an alarm to let hospital staff know they have bouncing baby discards.

Maybe it surprised me because, as the CNN article states, Japan has no laws or taboos against abortion. It's readily available to any woman who wants the procedure.

Maybe some of the pregnant women are in denial until the baby's born. Maybe some of them didn't know they were pregnant until it was too late to do anything about it.

Maybe some of them thought they wanted their babies, and once the babies were born and the ugly, loud reality of parenthood became clear, it was time to throw the squiggling, squalling ballast overboard and abandon ship.

Not everyone wants their kids, either before or after the kids have been born. The smart thing to do is to prevent conception. When that fails, the parent needs to have an "out." An abandoned baby who's found has a chance at a better life than a baby stuck with a parent who doesn't like it and doesn't want it.

Even an abandoned baby found dead comes to a better end than a child found severely abused or neglected, but alive...or worse yet, dead from the abuse after years of enduring a living hell.

Abandon your babies, Japan. Do it for the children!
